Why is requisite parenting style necessary

  • Parenting styles are powerful tools for understanding, assessing, and working with children and families.
  • Current parenting styles (typology) are based on White Eurocentric knowledge and needs. They do not fully reflect Black children’s needs or the parents’ motivations, and so, Black children suffer from poor assessments by child-facing professionals.
  • Unlike established parenting typologies, Requisite parenting situates the profound negative impact of anti-Black racism (Afrophobia) and poverty on Black children, the parents, and the parent-child relationship in multiracial societies.
  • Requisite parenting was developed with Black children, their parents and social workers & child practitioners who work with Black families. So, it speaks directly to Black children’s needs. It gives a name to what good Black parents already do.
  • Requisite parenting does not preclude Black parenting from other widely used parenting styles – instead, it adds to the list of parenting styles. So, Black parents in general can still be found to be practicing any of the other better-known parenting styles.
